making it up, one song at a time
“I brought two friends – we were all transported!
It was a mental health boost way beyond therapy!
We sing, gathered in a circle – this most powerful, ancient form of community – to share our humanity, see and hear each other deeply, uplift our world, and build resilience through co-creation.
We invite you to explore our site, check out our calendar of events and join us in a circle to discover the magic for yourself.
what is circlesinging?
Circlesinging is a “judgement-free zone” – every singer, whether experienced or just learning what their voice can do, brings something unique that can flourish into authentic music. A recent newcomer summed it up perfectly when she said, “listen deeply and the rest of the group makes you sound great!”
Circlesinging can be described lots of ways: It’s been called group vocal improvisation, vocal “jamming,” add-a-part/change-a-part, vocal orchestra, “voicestra”, a “drum circle” for singers, or just plain “make it up” singing. It’s done all over the world in countless different ways and it dates back to the earliest forms of human singing.
Circlesongs can last as long you want. Our 90-minute monthly circles on 3rd Wednesdays and our multi-hour annual Sing For Your Life celebration are just the way we do it. People come and go, solo or stay with the group, and sometimes even take a turn leading. The song changes and shifts over time, as people step in and out of the center, composing unique, layered parts on the spot. Other groups have their own flavor – some are more structured, and some are looser. What matters is the music different every time, and singers of all levels of experience are welcome to “get it where you fit in.”
Circles spring up all the time, all over the Bay Area, and all over the world. Our gatherings are unique due to the leadership of David Worm, and the contributions of community members who learned and continue to expand the craft with Bobby McFerrin. These talented singers take turns leading our circles, bringing a high level of musicianship, fun, and excitement to their spontaneous creations. Once a circlesong is established, the leader often steps out of the middle for a while, giving others a chance to solo, or even lead. If you aren’t in the Bay Area and you want to find a Circle near you, check out the listings on our “Resources” page and in our events calendar!
